Jesus Didn’t Die So I Could D.I.Y.

Let’s be honest. How many of us have ever read a self-help book or watched a do-it-yourself video? Revenue from sales of such items reveals millions of people are searching for ways to “lose 20 pounds,” “become a better cook,” “be more organized” or “stop smoking.” Let’s be really honest. How many of us who read that self-help book and tried to do it ourselves succeeded?

Paul, in his letter to the church in Colossae, points out to the Christians there that they died with Christ to the spiritual forces of this world. Then he questions them about why they continue to live and submit themselves to the rules of the world. Paul even states that some rules appeared worthy, as many of the laws and regulations in churches do, but he reminds us in verse 23 that these laws cannot overcome the desires of the flesh.

Sin affects all of us (Romans 3:23), but we often try to downplay its power. The truth is that the desires of our flesh are infinitely more powerful than any of us alone. Paul clearly describes the strength of sin’s grip in Romans 7:15-24 as he shares his constant battle with doing what he doesn’t want to do. Don’t fret. There is hope! Sin can be overcome, but not by self-imposed restrictions or religion.

Religion will always try to legislate morality with rules. Religion will always want you to clean yourself up before you can be accepted. Galatians 5:18 says “if you are led by the Spirit, then you are not under the law.” No law, rule, or regulation ever changed a person’s heart. Only Jesus has the power to defeat sin in our lives.

Reflect:

  • Is there a recurring sin in your life you need to give over to Jesus? What is one step you can take today to do that?
  • Do you have someone in your life who can pray for you and encourage you through a difficult time? Who is it? Are you allowing them to support you? If the answer is no, maybe your next step is joining a group
