Jump In Already

Joshua 3

I’m a jump in kinda girl. Even today as we took our last swim of the season in water temperatures cooler than we prefer, I took it on all at once. I’m not a wader. I’m not one to gradually torture myself by inching in. I don’t dig the slow numbing; I much prefer the run-fast-before-you-have-time-to-reconsider, lose-your-breath plunge.

Sometimes God requires the jump in kind of faith.

I remember when I was begging God for opportunities to write and teach about His faithfulness, and I encountered Joshua 3 in my time with Him. God used this passage to clearly communicate my need to step out in faith. To jump in, so to speak. I had long waffled between waiting on God to move and initiating my own bold steps of faith. I wasn’t sure which He wanted me to do.

But in His command for the Israelites, God tells them He’ll have the Jordan River stand in a heap when the priests step into the water, which was rolling at flood stage. Verses 15-16 capture it beautifully, “Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away…” They could’ve stood on the bank waiting on God, but He required the first step to be theirs.

When we move forward in faith, we demonstrate our belief in His faithfulness and provision.  So, jump in already.
