Just Listen

Many times I’ve jumped to conclusions without bothering to find out the entire story. I’ll also admit to interrupting my husband to add my two cents. Far too many times, I made my opinion known without listening. And quite a few of those circumstances ended in embarrassment and me apologizing for my behavior.

God knows our nature and warns us against this type of behavior. In Proverbs 18:13, He advises us that hasty comments bring us shame. When we stop to listen, we show other people that we value them and their opinions. When we pause to consider and understand, we allow ourselves time to make comments that are educated and honor Jesus.

I don’t think Proverbs 18:13 only applies to our conversations with people. I think it can also serve as a reminder in our relationship with God. As we lift up our prayers to Him, we must be patient and listen. Consider Abraham, whom God promised would have a child (Genesis 15-16). But Abraham didn’t wait for God and conceived a child with his wife’s servant. When we take action without waiting for God, we end up making decisions we regret.

God answers our prayers in His own time and in His own way. Is there an area in your life where you need to stop creating your own answers and wait for God?
