Learn from the Past

When studying history in school I remember thinking: What’s the purpose?  Knowing this stuff has no impact on my life today!

In 1 Corinthians, Paul has a history lesson for the church in Corinth.  In verse 4, he tells them of how their ancestors were under God’s sovereign power and that even in those days Christ was their firm foundation. The Corinthians are told how their ancestors became distracted by the things of the world.  They idolized themselves and focused on instant gratification and pleasure.  They preferred to party and gave in to sexual temptations. He also describes the unpleasant consequences of these choices.

Contrary to my early thoughts regarding history, through His Word, we see God use people and events from thousands of years ago for a purpose. This purpose is to instruct and encourage us today.  Idolizing oneself, instant gratification, partying and sexual temptation all sound like a typical day in America in 2013.  These same temptations existed thousands of years ago, and God used Paul to record the history as warnings for the Corinthians and for us today.  In verse 13, we are also encouraged that if we stand firm in God’s strength, not our own, He will enable us to resist the temptations of today’s world.

  • What temptations do you encounter during a typical week?
  • Do you feel alone in battling these temptations?  God is always with you, just reach out to Him and ask for the strength to resist.
