John 11

Sometimes it seems God is ok with all the bad things happening on this planet. If He were all powerful and good wouldn’t He do something about pain and suffering?

He isn’t ok with it and He has done something about it! We can see God’s response and reaction to bad things happening in the story of Lazarus. John 11 begins with the solemn funeral of Jesus’ good friend Lazarus. Jesus meets with Lazarus’ sisters on the way to the funeral and in John 11:33 we see Jesus’ response, “When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.” English words fail to capture the full weight of Jesus’ emotional response. The words could better be translated “agitated” and “snorting with anger.” Do you ever feel angry when bad things happen? Jesus does. Jesus is angry at the human disobedience that brought sin and death into this world.

Jesus didn’t stop at an emotional response. Jesus was uniquely positioned to do something about the death of Lazarus. As The Resurrection and the Life, Jesus summoned Lazarus from the grave and the funeral was over! That is Christ’s reaction to death. Through Jesus, death is defeated. The grave is overcome and He is victorious. For friends of Jesus, Jesus offers to walk with you through bad times. For followers of Jesus, He offers Himself as the answer to sin and death.
