Love Protects

When we think about protection, we often think about physically protecting someone from danger. Most married couples are willing to protect their spouse physically, but this verse implies much more than physical protection. Couples should also be willing to protect their spouse’s feelings. All married couples are guilty of cutting each other down and saying things that would embarrass or hurt their spouse.

By vowing to protect, we are promising to respect our spouse’s feelings. We are promising to put our spouse’s happiness above our own happiness. Protecting our spouse’s feelings means that at times we might have to have our own feelings hurt. By agreeing to protect our spouse, we are saying we care more about them than we do ourselves.

Father, help us to be willing to do anything to protect the one you created for us.
