Loyalty When Times Get Tough

Read

Ruth 1

How do you act when times get tough? Do you move forward in persistence or give up in frustration? Do you let others help or push people away? Do you choose to stay loyal to the ones you love even when it isn’t convenient?

The book of Ruth begins with a tragic death and a drastic move. Naomi had just lost her husband after moving to a foreign land for him. Soon after her husband’s death, both of her sons died as well. Naomi was left to mourn with her two widowed daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah. Times were tough, to say the least, and Naomi was bitter. But as Naomi tried to send her daughters-in-law back to their homelands to start their lives over, Ruth refused. "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God" (v.16).

Naomi was not an easy person to stick by. But Ruth did it even when Orpah could not. Ruth remained in a foreign land to support her mother-in-law even though it could have stripped her of an opportunity to remarry and have children. Ruth chose loyalty and obedience before she ever had any idea of the great way God would use her.

It's often hard to stand by people when the goings get tough. But our loyalty to others shows Jesus' love to them. Imagine what would happen if Jesus had left when life got tough. Like Ruth, we must choose loyalty over convenience. The Lord will always bless our obedience to what is good and right.

Reflect:

  • In what way can you show God's love to others in the tough times?
  • How has God stood by you recently?
