Make Everyday Extraordinary

You don’t have to be a celebrity, an adrenaline junkie or a multi-millionaire to live an adventurous life. No matter how mundane our schools, workplaces or homes might seem, there are no ordinary days in the life of a believer. As a Christ follower,  every day is an opportunity to be part of the ultimate adventure -- experiencing God’s life-changing work on Earth -- if we’ll just listen and obey.

In Acts 8, Philip’s day starts like any other. Then, an angel of the Lord rearranges his plans. The angel didn’t give Philip a detailed plan. He didn’t say, "I want you to lead an Ethiopian official to Christ today, so go to this spot, knock on the door of his chariot and share the gospel." Philip had no idea what he was walking into; just that he was to start down the southern road that connects Jerusalem to the Gaza desert.

As Philip followed the Holy Spirit’s lead, God brought him and the Ethiopian eunuch to the right place at the right time for a miracle to happen. It’s not a coincidence that Philip came upon the caravan as the eunuch was headed home from church and reading Isaiah’s description of Jesus’s death. God had already been at work in the Ethiopian man’s heart, and through the Holy Spirit, God put Philip in the man’s path at the perfect time for him to hear the gospel and respond.

The abundant life promised by Jesus unfolds one step at a time as we listen and obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit. For Philip and the Ethiopian, following the Holy Spirit led to a high-ranking official getting baptized on the side of the road. God has similar adventures in store for each one of us if we’ll follow His lead and embrace the unexpected.

Reflect:

  • Think about the people and circumstances that have played a part in your walk with Jesus to this point. How has the Holy Spirit placed you the right places at the right times for you to grow in your faith?
  • We all have a next step in our walk with Jesus. What is the Holy Spirit prompting you to do next?
