Make Room for God

I consider myself a champion eater. Put a buffet in front of me, and I’ll find a way to sample every delicacy. There’s only one problem. Sooner of later, I will lose my appetite and even the good things I put in my mouth taste bland and pleasureless.

In many ways, our lives are much like a buffet table. We are surrounded by ways to fill our cravings, whether it’s food, work, relationships, sports or anything else that gives us pleasure and worth. We depend on these temporary, and ultimately worthless, things. We hope in them. Often, we binge on them so much our appetites are spoiled for the true joy of Christ. Jesus says He is the “bread of life,” the only thing that fully satisfies us heart, mind and soul (John 6:35).

Jesus wants to be our first and only joy. He wants to be our true love. And, He is constantly asking us to make room in our hearts for Him. Jesus is relentless in showing us our appetites for idols. He shows us all the ways we forsake life in Him for life in the things He created (Colossians 1:16). If we do not learn to feast on Jesus first, fully and always, our fleshly desires will inevitably replace Him as our god and source of satisfaction.
