Man vs. Wild

I remember the first time I went camping as a young boy. I went with a group of people from my church, and I had no idea what to expect. Some of the people had clearly camped before. They brought lanterns, knives, wool blankets, large tents, food, kindle and firewood. Still, others were ill prepared, with no tent, food or supplies. They had to sleep in someone else’s tent and use someone else’s resources. I was one of those people. I brought nothing that would sustain me in the wild, and I needed someone else to provide for me.

The same is true as a follower of Jesus. The world we live in is wild. We will face sin, temptation and enemies of God just like the author of Psalm 3. In every situation, God and His Word will sustain, equip and provide for us. Jesus models what this looks like in Matthew 4:1-11. Each time Jesus faces a trial, He is sustained, protected and prepared by Scripture.

God promises to never leave us or forsake us. When He brings us to the wilderness, it is to rebuild us, repair us and refine us so our hearts begins to reflect His heart. Difficulty teaches us repentance, gives us wisdom and trains us to rely on God.

If you are in a trial now, remember that God’s Word can sustain you. Let the truth found in the Bible be your comfort and your guide.
