Maxed Out

For 10 years after I gave my life to Jesus, I continued messing up time and time again. My flesh and its wants trumped my desires to surrender to God, and I repeatedly cheated on Him with the things of the world.

As I slowly opened my heart to the things of God and began reading His Word, I was relieved to see Peter, the foremost disciple, dropped the ball on several occasions. In Matthew 14, he walks on water and begins to sink as the wind frightens him. Jesus asks, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” In John 18, Peter cuts a man’s ear off when the religious leaders come to arrest Jesus. In Luke 22, we see him deny Christ. Not once. Not twice. But three times.

Thankfully, our God is a God of second chances and fourth chances. Our God has unlimited patience, and His forgiveness is always waiting. He is eager to restore us to a right relationship with Him. And, when we’re ready to cooperate with His work in us, He wants to use us to point people to Him.

Even after all of Peter’s failures, God empowered him to preach with supernatural effectiveness on the day of Pentecost. In Acts 2:41, we learn “Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.”

We can’t max out God’s grace and forgiveness. Our God doesn’t give up on us.
