Measure Up

One thing teachers observe on a daily basis is students comparing themselves to one another. Not a day goes by that we don’t hear something along the lines of, “I can do that better than you.” And these kids are 10! Unfortunately, the culture we have in our society of always trying to be better than the next person starts at an early age and only intensifies as we get older.

Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 10, however, that those who compare themselves to others are unwise. When we choose to measure our self worth by comparing our success to the success of someone else, we are saying that there is no standard of comparison higher than ourselves. We are finding value in what we perceive to be able to do on our own instead of boasting in the Lord, knowing that any good we do is possible only through Him.

Life is not a contest to be better than everyone else around us. We cannot measure ourselves based on what our friends, siblings and parents have accomplished. Instead, we must realize that our only standard is Jesus, and there is no standard higher. Rather than wasting time trying to set our own levels of comparison, we must strive to be more like Jesus every day.

  • In what was are you trying to live up to a standard other than Jesus?
  • What are you doing every day to be more like Jesus?
