Mercy in God’s Timing

Sometimes I get really frustrated with God’s timing. In my work, relationships, free time and even in my quiet time, there have been moments when I wanted God to do something drastic—to make a big change happen fast. When He didn’t I was left feeling confused, sad and angry. Have you ever felt this way?

As you read through Exodus, you’ll pick up on the fact that God is making some serious changes in the lives of the people He called out of Egypt. He leads them to a new land, He gives them a new law to live by and He makes a new covenant with them that will last for eternity. But in the midst of all this change, God highlights the importance of His timing.

In Exodus chapter 23, God tells the people He will drive their enemies out of the land so they can inhabit it and make a permanent home, but He plans to do this in a way that no one expects. God says, “I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land” (Exodus 23:29-30). These verses are an incredible example of God’s power and His mercy for us as His children! Could he drive the people out in a year? Of course! He could drive them out in an instant! But He chooses to do it differently for the sake of His people.

The next time you begin to question God’s timing, read back through these verses and remind yourself that God loves you enough to lead you “little by little.”
