Not Ashamed, Not Alone

Remember being a teenager? I sure do. The teenage years are marked by insecurity, self-doubt and confusion. There is a gigantic battle between the wills, and an even bigger battle for the heart. Peer pressure draws so powerfully, and reality is skewed so cleverly.

What are Christian teens encouraged to do? To stand out, to stand firm in their beliefs, to not conform to the patterns of this world. This same call is directed toward all of us who follow Christ.

Following Christ and “taking up our cross” doesn’t mean we follow Him only when no one is looking. It doesn’t mean we follow Him Monday through Friday and pretend the weekends don’t matter. We are called to boldly show that Christ lives within us—by our actions, our attitudes and our outlook on life.

How else will we know God’s bigger plan for us? We must separate our values from those of the world so we can walk alongside Him and hear His voice clearly and objectively. Romans 12:2 tells us “to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.”

No matter how old we are, others’ influence is a powerful force and the temptation to fall into the patterns of the world still exist. Will you be ashamed? Will you waver? Or, will you take up your cross and look straight ahead, walking sure-footedly and assuredly into the future?
