Open Invitation

Luke 15

Soon after my wedding, my father told me, “As long as I have groceries, you have groceries.” He knew that we couldn't get by just on love. We had similar conversations with my wife's parents and grandparents. We made our rounds each week and then headed back to our house for cereal, bologna and Kraft macaroni and cheese. Those standing invitations were quite helpful during the first year or two of marriage.

Sometimes we fail to appreciate the benefits of an open invitation. Both the prodigal son and his older brother took for granted their father's benevolence. At any time, either of them could have had all that the father had and yet they rejected the benefits of their Father's house. Instead of immersing themselves in the benefits of the father's house, they left in search of momentary pleasures and wrapped themselves in the cold blanket of bitterness and jealously.

Have we taken time to appreciate our Father for His open invitation? He's given us so much. Every good and perfect gift has come from Him. Perhaps we are the prodigal son who has left everything to chase fleeting desires. Be thankful that our Father has extended an open invitation and run home as fast as you can.
