Passionate Work

We’re created in the image of God and because of that we are passionate people. God is passionate. So, even though we may not feel passion, we are image-bearers of Christ and thus have passion. God is extremely passionate about people, and we should be too. The Bible tells us to spread the Gospel and to love others, even those who hurt us.

Today I’m challenged when I think about my work. Many of us dread our work while others of us love our work and feel guilty because we do.  So what does the Bible say about work?  First, it is important to realize that we are gifted and called to work.  Proverbs 12:24 says that laziness ends in slave labor.  We should use the gifts God has given us in the work we do. Colossians 3:23 says, “whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” Many question if it is wrong to enjoy their work. Solomon, the man known for his wisdom, said, “Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of his life God has given him—for this is his lot. Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot, and be happy in his work—this is the gift of God” Ecc. 5:18-19.

So if you are headed into your day of work or reflecting on the day you just had, know that God desires passion in our lives—including the work we do each day.  After all, God oversees creation each day and takes multi-tasking to a new level. As those created in His image, we too should be passionate about our work.
