Placed on Purpose

“And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you” (Genesis 45:5).

Joseph’s journey began with an act of evil perpetrated on him by his jealous brothers. Like Joseph, maybe an evil act or tragic accident sent you down an unexpected path. Maybe you’ve spent years asking why. But what if,  like Joseph, God wants to take what others meant to harm you and use it for good?

Joseph, instead of being angry with God, focused on serving God wherever he was. And eventually, he realized why he had been through abandonment, slavery, and jail. Those experiences placed him in the position to save not one nation but two. Because Joseph set aside grain for the famine, the Egyptians survived. And through Joseph, God brought Jacob and the seedling nation that became Israel to Egypt, where they were saved and grew.

God knows the pain, tragedy, and sometimes evil that will be done to us. He already has plans to work things together for our good.  Like Joseph, our struggles and tragedies may place us exactly where we need to be.

Reflect:

  • Think about the major life events that led to where you are today. How has God already used bad situations for your good?
  • What are you going through now that causes you to wake most days and ask ‘Why?’ What would it look like to serve God and serve others in that circumstance?
