Playing By The Rules

Do you ever feel suffocated by too many rules and laws in society? Too many at work? At school? It’s quite possible you’ve taken issue with rules at some point. What you’ve experienced, pales in comparison to what the Israelites experienced under the law of Moses. In Exodus, God lays the foundation for what He expects from His people. To break God’s laws invited complete separation from Him. By Jesus’s time, religious officials had expanded the law to include hundreds more commands.

Humanity’s debt was far greater than we could afford. We were hopelessly separated from God, but He loved us enough to do what we couldn’t do for ourselves. In Matthew, we see the price that had to be paid to free us from sin and fulfill the law. Jesus was whipped, beaten and humiliated — and that was just the start.

It took Jesus’s death to bring us back into perfect fellowship with our Father. As we reflect on Jesus’s sacrifice for us, let’s thank Him for the gift of salvation and restoration in the eyes of our Father. Let’s also remember that freedom in Christ means leaving the bondage of the law and focusing our energy on loving our Heavenly Father.
