Plug In

What does it mean to be connected?
First, it is not a “what” we are connecting to but a “who” – God. We connect to God through:
 Reading the Bible
 Prayer
 Time alone with God
 Acts of obedience

Imagine a lamp with a 100 watt light bulb. It was made to shine brightly, but it is not plugged into the electrical outlet. We are the lamp because we are made in the image of God, but with no power we are just something nice to look at on the outside with no outstanding purpose. We are dark. Our power cord must be plugged into the outlet before we can shine and bring light into darkness.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16 that “You are the light of the world ... let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
In my busy world where every moment is scheduled, it is easy to get disconnected from the power source. When I get far away from God and overly focused on the stresses around me, that darkness seeps in and douses the light. But when my focus stays on God, when I stay plugged into that outlet, His brightness can overpower that darkness in and around me, and others can see it, too.

Jesus also said He is “the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’” (John 8:12).
To be the light of the world, we have to follow the light of the world. So plug in and walk in the light.
