Praise Is Powerful

“Oh Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1a).

God created us to praise Him. Moses praised God with song (Exodus 15:1-18), King David danced before the Lord with praise (2 Samuel 6:14), John the Baptist shouted, “Behold the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29, NKJV) and thousands of angels cry out, “Worthy is the Lamb!” (Revelation 5:12). Even so, some Christ followers haven’t experienced the power of unbridled praise for our God.

I have always felt natural lifting my hands to God, dancing before God, weeping tears of joy for God and singing loudly for God. But not everyone is that comfortable with demonstrative praise. You may simply be unsure of how to “get started.”

Reading or singing Psalm 8 aloud, as well as Psalms 9, 18 and 150, is a perfect starting place for learning to freely praise God. God creates us to praise Him, and also provides us the words — the Bible — to use in praising Him.

Praise unleashes God’s power, love, comfort and healing over us. Just as sharing loving words with our children, spouse or friends creates intimacy, expressing our praises to God creates intimacy with Him. God commands us to praise Him not because He is an egomaniacal dictator, but because He knows our praising Him will release His power into our lives, with no limit to what He will do for us and through us.

  • To praise God we must know Him. Have you surrendered your life to Jesus as your Lord and Savior?
  • Do you hesitate to openly express your love for God? If so, why do you think that happens?
  • How often do you genuinely praise God? What can you do to praise Him more often and in creative ways?
