Promises, Promises

I can’t stand it when people say they will do something and don’t keep their word, but I am just as guilty. When I say I will be somewhere or do something, I intend to follow through. But, sometimes, I can’t keep my word. I disappoint myself, and I have let down someone else, too.

I simply can’t be trusted. But God is infinitely trustworthy.

In Genesis 48:1-11, Jacob, near the end of his life, describes to Joseph how God promised to increase his number and give land to his descendants. In verse 11, you can almost hear the excitement in his voice as Jacob talks of finally seeing Joseph again, plus Joseph’s two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

After many years, maybe wondering if it would ever happen, Jacob got a sneak peek at God’s promise being fulfilled. No matter how big or small it is, when God says He will do something, He always follows through.

Is there a promise of God that you are holding onto, waiting for God to work it out? Are you trying to “make” things happen in your own power instead of waiting on God’s perfect timing? When we realize we can’t even trust ourselves, God is there, ready to prove again and again that He can be trusted.

Reflect:

  • What has God promised you? Are you waiting for Him?
  • What do you need to do, or stop doing, to trust God at His word?
