Pulling Weeds

Have you ever walked through a garden that has been neglected?  Weeds carpet the ground.  Vines choke out life. Plants strain for sun, and consequently, fruit is small and scarce. Only traces can be seen of the gardener’s original intention, and it is difficult not to wonder about the garden’s potential beauty if only someone would have done the work necessary to keep it maintained.

As believers, we are given the amazing gift of the Holy Spirit.  It is God’s desire for us to bear fruit and grow into the likeness of His Son, but all too often we make the choice to follow our flesh instead of walking in the Spirit.  Before we know it, things like the busyness of life, self-centered decisions, and unconfessed sin spring up like weeds in our spiritual lives, crowding out the potential for fruit.  In Luke 9:23 Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Since our natural flesh is contrary to the Holy Spirit’s promptings, we must make a decision every day to keep in step with the Spirit. The evidence of this is the fruit that will naturally come from following the Spirit- lives marked by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.
