Rags To Righteousness

Zechariah 2:1-3:10

We hear stories all the time of people going from obscurity to notoriety. A nobody becoming a somebody. Someone who was down to earth becoming larger than life. These stories have been coined with the phrase “rags to riches.”

For those of us who know Jesus, “rags to riches” is our story. In Zechariah 3, the prophet Zechariah describes how a priest named Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel of the Lord. The angel instructs those around him to take off Joshua’s filthy clothes and replace them with fine garments.

Isaiah 64:6 says all our acts of righteousness are like filthy rags. That means all of our striving in life leave us covered in filthy clothes just like Joshua. But there is hope. Jesus replaces our rags with His robe of righteousness (Isaiah 61:10). Because of Jesus we are now clothed in a robe of righteousness instead of covered with rags of regret and remorse.

Just like Joshua, we can go from rags to righteousness. Jesus brings us from obscurity to notoriety. From being a nobody to a somebody. From our rags to His righteousness.

  • Are you wearing rags of regret and remorse? Ask Jesus to replace them with His righteousness.
  • Is there an area of your life where you are relying on your acts of righteousness to bring you closer to God?
  • Is there any area of your life where you need to stop striving and rest in Jesus?
