Receiving Righteousness

When I was younger, my parents gave me a present not only on my birthday, but on my sister’s birthday as well. I was never expecting it and I probably didn’t deserve it, which made receiving a gift all the more fun. Because my parents had no reason to give me a present, I felt even more special.

Many people go through the day trying to follow the rules and earn God’s favor. But the Bible shows us this is impossible. In Romans 4, Paul writes about Abraham to illustrate that everyone who ever received righteousness received it as a gift from God. We cannot earn righteousness through upright acts or a moral code.

When we realize we can never be righteous on our own and accept God’s undeserved gifts, we experience true freedom and joy. It’s sort of like getting a present when it isn’t even your birthday.
