At one time or another, we’ve all felt short changed. Maybe you worked hard at your job only to be passed up for a promotion. Maybe a classmate is rude to you, no matter how many times you try to be nice. Or maybe you’ve had to endure something far worse, like a messy divorce or the sudden loss of a loved one. Whatever your story, God wants you to know it isn’t over.

Although life is sometimes painful, Jesus explains to the disciples in Luke 6:20-22 that the reward in heaven is great for those who suffer now. He says, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.”

Just as we run races for a medal at the finish line and return to work each day for the promise of a paycheck, we can rejoice through our struggles, “because great is your reward in heaven” (Luke 6:23). You will be satisfied. You will laugh. The kingdom of God is yours. That’s a reward worth staying in the race for, and a reason to celebrate even while you’re still running.
