Remembering His Love

I love looking at old photo albums because they are filled with so many memories.

When I read Ezekiel 16, I imagine God looking back through a picture album of the lives of the Israelites, remembering what it was like when they were young. He gives a beautiful description of how He cared for the people and redeemed them. Then He relates to them as His bride to show how deeply He loves them. But this passage also shows how Israel responded to that love. Instead of loving God back, they worshiped idols.

Verse 22 tells us the reason for their sin. They failed to remember that everything good in their lives was from God, and they began to trust His gifts more than they trusted Him. Imagine how deeply hurt God, who remembered every detail of how He lovingly redeemed them, must have felt when they turned from His love.

We experience the same temptation as the Israelites to forget what God has done for us. Sometimes when I feel far from God, I reflect on the day I met Jesus. I even look through old pictures to help myself remember what my life was like before He was in it. I remember the moment I met Jesus and recall the ways He has transformed my life since. Thinking about how He has loved me helps me remember how much I need Him, and I desire to love Him better in return.

If you could look back on a photo album of your life with Jesus, what would you see? Take some time today recall God’s goodness and thank Him for the way He has saved you and shaped you since the day you met Jesus.
