Rescue Me

Read

Genesis 37

I needed rescue in my early teen years — not from jealous brothers but from my own foolishness. Attempts to be "cool" led me into the back of a pickup truck for a joyride late one night. We cruised around for about an hour, and several of us lay down to escape the cold air. When we stopped, we found our clothes were wet. That’s when we discovered the truck belonged to a painting business, and kerosene had spilled in the truck bed. I immediately thought of the lighters and cigarettes passed around during our ride. We could have been quick-fried in seconds.

God protected and rescued me in spite of the danger I had unwittingly put myself in. He had better plans for me.

Joseph's brothers had hated him since his birth. They set out to destroy him, first plotting to kill him, then deciding to just fake his death after selling him to a passing caravan of traders. The brothers did not expect Joseph to escape slavery, but God had big plans for Joseph. God rescued Joseph and eventually gave Joseph great blessing, even using him to rescue his brothers who wanted him dead.
Nearly facing death shocked me into the reality that life could end at any moment. That night after the joyride, I told Jesus I wanted to give my life completely to Him, as my Lord. God rescued me and has been faithful to fulfill His great plans for me, just as He rescued and fulfilled His great plans for Joseph. God wants us to trust Him, to let Him reveal His great plans, because He loves us more than we can imagine.

Reflect:

  • Have you allowed God to rescue you and begin fulfilling His plans for you?
  • How do you celebrate your rescue? Through praise? Through telling others? Through giving?
