Resisting Temptation

Some temptations are easy to identify: wanting to be rude back to someone, driving faster than I should, eating things I know aren't good for me.

Sometimes, though, temptation is subtle. It is disguised as an opportunity with a financial or emotional gain. I spend time debating — should I or shouldn’t I?  When these situations arise, I apply these phrases: “I’m tempted to,” “it’s hard to resist” or “sounds tempting.” If I can describe my feelings with any of these, I know the Holy Spirit inside of me is warning me not to proceed. It may be a situation I should avoid completely. Maybe it’s just poor timing or it's not the right person or place.

In James 4:7-8, God teaches us how to overcome temptations. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you.” When we recognize we are being tempted, we need to humble ourselves and pray for God’s help. God promises the devil will not only leave, but flee, as Jesus comes to our side.

Today, ask God to help you recognize and resist temptations in your life.
