Road Closed: Follow Detour

Read

Psalm 84

Have you ever felt stuck between where you are and where you want to be? You’ve laid out your life’s map, flagging all the milestones you want to meet, bursting to get from one stop to the next. But where you are now? It’s not where you had planned to go, and you can’t see an easy route to get off this detour. It’s hard when life’s journey looks different than the roads we had chosen.

Instead of focusing on just making it to our next milestone, that lofty goal we had set for ourselves, we can look further down the road to what God has in store for us. The Bible tells us that what awaits us in eternity is what our souls long for (Psalm 84:1-2). That means no matter how many of our milestones we hit from beginning to end, we will never be truly satisfied and fulfilled on this side of heaven.

When we narrow our eyes to see only the path we want to take, detours drain us of joy. When we open our eyes to God’s plans for our lives, there is strength and hope in the detours (Psalm 84:5-7). The Creator of the universe sees your life from beginning to end, and the journey He has laid out for you is perfect because it gets you to where He knows you need to go. So celebrate when you make it to your next milestone, but rest with Jesus in the detours you didn’t see coming.

Reflect:

  • Remember a detour in the plans you made. What is one thing you learned through that time about yourself and about God?
  • What is one thing you can determine to do differently the next time you walk through a season that’s not on your map?
