Seeing Beyond the Circumstance

Acts 27

We all hope our direction in life leads to good outcomes.  Followers of Christ know God’s promise that He works for our good.  Sometimes, however, we let our hope be based on things going on around us. We allow our present circumstances to tell us how it is going to be in the future.

Acts 27 is a riveting first-person account of a desperate journey. Before a final shipwreck, the people involved endured slow progress, loss of direction, arguments, fear, hunger and weather so overwhelming they just “gave way to it and were driven along.” They tied the ship together with ropes, tossed cargo overboard, threw away fishing tackle and food and some even tried to sneak away. Luke, the author, says, “we finally gave up all hope of being saved.” If rough circumstances could lead Luke to such personal despair, it can happen to us, too.

Thankfully, Luke had someone in his life who could see beyond circumstances. Paul, knowing God had promised to save everyone, told them, “I have faith in God that it will happen just as He told me,” and Luke later reports, “In this way everyone reached land safely.”  Battered and exhausted, Paul’s encouragement and their faith in God’s promises helped give them hope to carry on.

God doesn’t expect us to do life alone. He provides us His complete written word and faithful people to encourage us as we face circumstances that have the potential to overwhelm and discourage us. His promises and the encouragement of others are part of a plan that is always greater than our circumstances.

  • How can you continuously grow in your relationship with Christ so circumstances don’t distort the hope you have in Him?
  • Do you need to be encouraged or be an encourager for others today?  If so, step up.
