Sewing a Tight Relationship

I love the change that fall brings — crisp mornings, the almost neon colors of our neighborhood trees. For me, it also brings needlework as I create yet another set of Halloween costumes for my family.

As I was sitting quite late trying to finish a ’50s poodle skirt with an enormous hem that seemed to extend with every stitch, my thread kept knotting. Frazzled nerves, increasingly shaky fingers and aggravatingly knotted thread equaled frustration.

With an enormous sigh, I said, “Sweet Jesus, I would really like it if you could keep my thread untangled and my fingers calm so I could finish this skirt.” My next thought was, “You shouldn’t bother Jesus with such an insignificant request!”

Where did those thoughts come from? The first came from my heart. I needed release from an encumbrance, so I asked my daily companion, friend, redeemer and Lord to release me. The second came from Satan — the father of lies, the tempter, the one who roams the earth looking to devour and turn me away from the one who loves and wants me to come to Him any time I like.

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Never hesitate to bring your requests to Jesus. He invites you to come.
