Step By Step

The family sat around the cabin’s breakfast table planning for the day. A strenuous hike up the mountain would end in a beautiful view. It was going to be tough, but they were determined to press forward to experience the end. Every step took a little more toll on them. Each experienced moments of wanting to stop, but they pushed on to reach the top. Philippians 4:13 encouraged them all the way up the mountain: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” There was a point when they each received a burst of energy that took them to the top.

In Acts 21, Paul is called to go back to Jerusalem, where his friends know people are waiting to harm him. Though a difficult step to take, Paul continues in obedience to God. He is captured, but in the next months and years is able to tell many citizens and leaders about Jesus.

Stepping up in our relationship with God means taking the next step He asks us to take. This isn’t always easy. Just like hiking a mountain, the next step often seems harder than the one before. It usually costs more. God sees our obedience and calls us to something a little more uncomfortable and a little more challenging. The good news is that just as the family received extra energy for the hike, God provides us the strength and resources to obey. There is a point when obeying God becomes easier because we learn how faithful He is to see us to the top.
