Stop Complaining and Start Praising

There are two great powers at war in our lives. One will lead us to an overfilled life of joy and passion for Jesus. The other will lead us down the path of discontent and bitterness. The first to life and the second to death. But these powers are much more subtle than you’d imagine.

It’s finals week at school and you have an unimaginably large workload ahead. You just lost your job even though you were a hardworking and passionate employee. It’s nearing the end of a season in your life and all you can remember is hurt and disappointment. Life has proven tough, and all you want to do is punch back with your words and let out your immense frustration. You just want to complain about how dumb your life is, this person or that, or the circumstances in which you find yourself.

But the truth is, there is only room for one of the two powers at war in our lives: complaint or praise. Try it out right now, try to praisingly complain about something. Can’t do it? That’s because it’s impossible! When we let ourselves complain, we’re robbing God of our praise. Paul warns us in Philippians to “do everything without grumbling or arguing” (Philippians 2:14). Instead, when life gets tough and the world seems all but fair, Paul tells us to “ glad and rejoice” (Philippians 2:18) because praise eliminates discontent and replaces it with joy. We must stop complaining and start praising.

  • How can you praise God in your current circumstances?
  • What are some ways to break the habit of complaining when life gets tough?
  • How can you encourage others to praise God during unfair or tough situations?
