Store Up Your Treasures

It’s easy to get so wrapped up in our own needs that we ignore the needs of others. Our busy schedules can blind us from the elderly neighbor who needs help with yard work or the single mom down the street who could use a night of relaxation. The newest gadget has our eye, and we don’t see the parents who need help feeding their family or the opportunity to bless someone heading off to a foreign mission. Selfishness can rob us of our ability to be generous.

In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he expresses his gratitude for their generosity. As he traveled, the Philippian church “sent [him] aid more than once when [he] was in need” (Philippians 4:16). This generosity was unmatched by any other church, and Paul reminds them that their giving would be “credited to [their] account” (Philippians 4:17).

Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Both Paul and the Philippians knew that self-serving attitudes of greed and apathy result in a treasure that will be destroyed here on Earth. Instead, by living others-minded and generous lives, we are storing up treasures in our heavenly account.
