Strong And Deep

A friend gave me two tomato plants and a metal cage to guide them as they grew. I put the cage in one pot, and left the other plant without. The plant with the guide grew strong and deep, while the plant without a guide began to lean and wilt.

This got me thinking about how we need guides in our spiritual lives, especially the guidance of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Proverbs 13:20 says, “He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.”

We need other believers to support us and hold us accountable. When we don’t have others speaking into our lives, it’s easy to settle into a routine and fall victim to sin. Luke 8:13 says, “Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.”

Believers nurture each other with encouragement and acts of service, and they keep the soil of our hearts soft by uprooting and exposing sin. Surrounding yourself with other believers enables your roots to grow strong and deep.
