Sunday Perspective Change

Admit it. We can be self-centered people. We make Sundays about rest, family, leisure activities and going to church. We come to church to have our needs met and to see what we can get out of it.

We are called to so much more. Church is about worshipping God and glorifying His name. One way we bring God glory is by serving in the church. The Holy Spirit prepares us for “works of service so that the body of Christ might be built up.” As members of the Body of Christ, we have responsibilities and a role to play.

The desire to serve comes from our recognition of who God is and how much He loves us. We never want to serve so we can earn God’s love, and we never want to serve to impress other people. God’s love for us is a free gift. He will not love us any more or any less based on our service. When we serve, we should serve “wholeheartedly as if we were serving the Lord and not men.” Sure, caring for babies in the nursery helps parents. Sure, giving rides on a golf cart people get from their car to the door easier. What we do welcomes and helps people. But we do it because we love the Lord, because we want to serve His church, and because we want to bring Him glory.

Loving and serving people takes time, effort and energy. It is intentional. God is intentional in His love for us. So as we strive to be more like Christ, we become intentional in serving God’s people.
