That Guy

Deep in the heart of man is the desire to make much of ourselves. We all know “that guy” who will stop at nothing to prove he is the hardest working, smartest thinking and fastest responding. He invites himself to meetings and generally walks and talks like he already owns the place.

His pride if obvious, but what’s also evident is an insecurity about whether he will receive a just reward for his skills, talents and labors. “That guy” takes matters into his own hands and helps things along.

That ugly scene is uglier still in the kingdom of God, where the overreaching for power, authority or status dethrones Christ in favor of our self-righteous deeds. The disciples are not immune. In Mark 10:35-45, they ask Jesus to sit at the right and left of his throne in heaven.

Only when we have a settled confidence in God’s perfect justice and his sovereignty over the world can we cease striving. We know that neither our rewards nor our judge is earthly. We can make ourselves “low,” because we have full confidence that we will be exalted when we follow the pattern of Christ.
