The Beginning of Passion

Are you living a passionate, hopeful life? Do you wonder how people live that way? Where do we find hope and passion in a hurting world?

After Jesus was crucified, the disciples were confused and devastated. They hoped He would be the one to redeem Israel, but their hope turned to despair as they watched Jesus bleed. They locked themselves in a room, fearing that they, too, would be captured and killed.

Then in Acts, the sequel to Luke, the disciples boldly proclaim the good news of Jesus to government officials, angry stone-throwing crowds, and the Pharisees who had Jesus killed. What gave them their courage? What gave them their passion?

The disciples encountered the resurrected Jesus in the midst of their pain, despair, and doubt. They heard Jesus was alive, “But they did not believe...because their words seemed to them like nonsense” (Luke 24:11). Then, Jesus met them where they were, and everything changed.

After they witnessed the resurrection, they went to Jerusalem and told the other disciples, “‘It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon” (Luke 24:34).

The resurrection was proof to the disciples, and is proof to us, that Jesus has power over death, hell, and the grave. Hope and passion come from believing the resurrection.

We can study Jesus and live by His example. We can look like a Christian. But, to be a courageous, passionate Christ-follower we must be radically changed by an encounter with Jesus. Could it be we’re not passionate because we don't believe that Jesus is alive? Could it be that we are still walking along the road confused, hurt, and devastated, when His abundant life waits to rise up in us?

Jesus is alive. Take courage. Live with passion.

Reflect:

  • Do you believe in the resurrection? Why or why not?
  • How would you rate your passion for Jesus on a scale of 1-10? What is one thing holding you back from living the abundant life Jesus died for?
  • Have you ever asked Jesus into your life? Could your passion be lacking because you need a relationship with Him? If that’s the case, you can start one today.
