The Best Way To Live

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline” (Proverbs 1:7).

When Solomon became king of Israel, he asked God for one thing -- wisdom to lead his people well. Like a proud father, God was so pleased by Solomon’s request that He poured out more wisdom on Solomon than anyone who had ever lived. Solomon grew in wisdom, wealth and honor. And at the end of his intellectual and spiritual journey, Solomon concludes that all is meaningless and a man’s life can be boiled down to one sentence: “Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13b).

For Solomon, wisdom wasn’t found in some enlightened state, ancient script or even the world around him. Wisdom began with acknowledging God and following His commands. The same is true for us today. Self help books, TV shows, meditative states and psychology offices can fill us with information. But true wisdom comes when we acknowledge God and do what He says.
