The Giver of Every Good Gift

Through the wonders of modern technology (like FedEx priority overnight delivery), I recently introduced some Southern friends and neighbors to the incredible experience of corn on the cob, hamburgers and a three-hour Maryland blue crab pick.

Sharing that experience made me wonder how often we take time to worship God through what we enjoy. Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 reminds us that godly people love life and glorify God all the time, in every activity. Somehow, Christians have picked up the old Greek philosophy of Gnosticism, which taught that physical pleasures were inherently sinful. Christians have a reputation as killjoys, but there’s no Biblical basis for that mentality.

James 1:17 says that every good gift and every perfect gift comes from above. Food? Awesome gift. Work? Awesome gift. Sex? Awesome gift. Money? Awesome gift. Eternal Life? Wow! Awesome gift!

When we openly worship God as the giver of every good gift in our lives, we begin to gain true perspective on both the gift and the giver. We gain a reputation for being happy in the joy of the Lord and naturally want to draw other people in to share what we have.
