The Heart Of The Matter

She spends days before the party planning, making trips to the store and spending more money than she budgeted. The floors need to be mopped and, as she bends down to clean a tough spot, she notices the baseboards need to be cleaned. The party comes, and she’s so tired she can’t even enjoy it.

How often do we lose focus of what really matters? How often do we get caught in the trap of trying to impress people?

The church at Galatia was guilty, yet in a much more serious way. Christian men were being pressured by others in the church to be circumcised. In Jewish law this had been the norm, but the pressure to do it now was motivated by a desire to avoid persecution. People were too concerned with what others would think if they weren’t following this law. These Christ followers were getting caught up in pleasing men instead of pleasing God.

Galatians 5:6 says, “in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” The Galatians should have been busy loving others and bringing them to faith in Christ instead of trying to impress men. We, also, need to check our motivation. Are we spending our effort and time pleasing men or pointing people to Jesus? When you find you’ve lost your focus, remember 1 Samuel 16:7: “The Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

Reflect:

  • Is there an area of your life where you are falling into a trap of pleasing people and losing sight of God’s purpose?
  • What has God called you to do? What habits are helping you pursue this purpose and what habits are hindering your purpose?
