The Least of These

God shows up big in Luke 9. First, Peter, John and James see God’s glory on a mountain and Jesus is revealed as God’s Son. It is incredible…indescribable. Then Jesus heals a boy who is being tormented by an evil spirit.

But what’s more fascinating about this chapter is what comes next. After seeing these miracles, the disciples start arguing about who will be the greatest of them. They totally lose sight of what Jesus is doing in front of them and how they should act in response to it.

Jesus brings their attention back to what is important by speaking of a little child beside him. “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.” (Luke 9:48)

Someone the world deemed as unimportant was considered the greatest by Jesus. Do you ever catch yourself looking down on one of the “least” and lifting yourself up? In a world that teaches us to look out for ourselves, we must ask God to keep our focus on Jesus and serving the “least” as he did.
