The Plank

“You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides Him there is no other. From heaven He made you hear His voice to discipline you” (Deuteronomy 4:35-36).

God persistently leads and cares for His people. He loves us so much He constantly challenges our thoughts and beliefs so we might begin to see the world as He does.

One way God reshaped my beliefs to reflect His was by changing my opinion of what’s “manly.” For a long time, I thought caring Christian men were weak and soft. I considered modesty and frugality the unfortunate byproducts of a “sheltered” existence. In my mind, I reduced Jesus’s character to only the assertive and aggressive qualities I could relate to.

Thankfully, I was surrounded by Christian men who loved me and were willing to share their lives with me. I was inspired by how they interacted with their wives, their children and each other. I saw the joy they experienced in life, and slowly I realized how narrow-minded I had been. I had not only been looking down on them. I was looking down on characteristics of Jesus that God wanted to develop in me. I was the person Jesus was talking about in Luke 6:42 when He said, “...You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Take some time to examine your heart. Where is God trying to change your attitude? Are you judging others while conveniently ignoring your own sin? Ask God where you need to grow and start the journey to repentance today.
