The Relay

In track, one distance stands out as terribly difficult—the 400 meter dash. With only one lap around the track, a runner must demonstrate both incredible speed and endurance.

Michael Johnson of the United States holds the world record at 400 meters. In 1999, Michael finished the race in only 43.18 seconds. But although Michael holds the individual record for that distance, it’s not the fastest anyone has ever covered 400 meters. During the 2008 Summer Olympics, a team from Jamaica beat Michael’s time by more than 6 seconds, setting a new world record for the men’s 4x100 meter relay.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” Michael ran the race alone while the team from Jamaica combined their individual talent and effort. Both races covered the same distance, yet the group of four men finished much faster.

As Christ followers, we have much work to do. God has called us to reach the world for Him. We have a long, hard journey ahead with amazing rewards. Why would we try to work alone? Meeting regularly with other Christ followers and serving alongside them is God’s will for his people. It’s both beneficial and a joy!
