The Sanctity of Friday Night

My husband and I take refuge in Friday nights at our house. They are reserved and protected as our time to reconnect after the bedlam of a week of soccer practice, business travel, homework, art lessons, laundry, deadlines, household responsibilities and family shopping.

We follow one conversation trail to the next with no timetable ticking away. We bring no agenda other than a desire to reacquaint ourselves after a chaotic week. This is not our date night, nor is this our only real conversation of the week. It is a safeguarded time of intimacy. During this time, I hear my husband’s heart and he hears mine. He shares what God is teaching him, unloads the stresses of work and asks my opinion about life issues.

A relationship with God works much the same way. In protected times of intimacy, we hear His voice and sense His direction. We hear God’s voice when we desire and pursue real relationship with Him. When we delight in Him, desire to know Him and love Him more, we hear His voice in authentic conversation with our hearts. In those times, we become less full of ourselves and more full of Him. The Holy Spirit’s influence in our lives grows, and we know with certainty what He is calling us to next.
