The Sum Of Its Parts

In football, success depends on how well the team works together. If a quarterback doesn’t communicate well, his runningbacks and receivers won’t know what to do. If the offensive line lets defenders run through them, the quarterback will spend most of the game on the turf.

In 1 Corinthians 12:12-31, Paul gives us an incredible metaphor for the church. “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body.” The church is made of diverse people, but they come together to create one beautiful body, united in purpose by the Gospel.

The parts of a body are united in a symbiotic relationship. Paul writes in verse 26, “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” Just like the football team, if one man fails in his job, the entire team suffers. But, if one man succeeds in his job, the whole team is rewarded. When we serve in the church, in any capacity, we use our unique gifts to help further the whole church in its mission to serve Christ.
