To Give And To Get

Acts 8:20

Acts 8:20: “But Peter said to him, “Your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of god with money!”

You’ve met this guy. He gives money to charity and makes a point to tell everyone about it. He wants everyone to know how “good” he is. But deep down, he is saying, “See how much I gave; now what do you have for me?” Or perhaps he’s telling God, “I won’t obey you in these other areas, but look how much I’m giving.”

God does ask us to give, and he does say He will bless us if we do. But you can’t buy God’s blessings and, more importantly, you can’t buy His gift of eternal life.

It is all about attitude. “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). He has no use for a gift given proudly or out of guilt. Financial freedom will come when stop giving because we believe it impresses God or makes up for other spiritual shortcomings, and we start giving because we are thankful for what He has done for us and it fills us with joy to know our money is furthering the work of God.
