To Give And To Get

Acts 8.20

“But Peter said to him, ‘Your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of god with money!’”

You’ve met this guy. He gives money to charity and tells everyone about it. He wants everyone to know how “good” he is. Deep down, he is saying, “See how much I gave. Now, what do you have for me?” Or perhaps he’s telling God, “I won’t obey you in these other areas, but look how much I’m giving.”

God does ask us to give, and he does say He will bless us if we do. But you can’t buy God’s blessings and, more importantly, you can’t buy His gift of eternal life.

It is all about attitude. “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). He has no use for a gift given proudly or out of guilt. Financial freedom comes when we stop giving because we believe it impresses God or makes up for other shortcomings, and we start giving because we are thankful for what He has done for us and we are filled with joy knowing our money is furthering His work.
