Too Much of a Good Thing

With Thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner, the temptation to overindulge will be greater than ever. If the sight and smell of delicious food is not tempting enough, you’ll have grandma cheering you on to eat more.

Sadly, most of us are familiar with eating ourselves into sickness. It’s not the cook’s fault or the food’s fault that we ate until our stomachs ached. Provision is not a sin. The Lord provides us with food, money, clothes, etc. Sin happens when take more than we need.

Proverbs 25:16 says “If you find honey, eat only what you need; otherwise, you’ll get sick from it and vomit” (HCSB). Honey signified abundance in King Solomon’s day. Like Solomon’s kingdom, America has been abundantly blessed and when we take in more than we need, we get sick.

Without self control, we find ourselves worshipping stuff instead of the God who created it. Today, take a moment to ask the Lord if you possess your possessions or if possessions are possessing you. If you find yourself sick from overindulgence, remember the Great Physician is on call and ready to heal what ails you.
