Toss Your Agenda

During the latter 1900s, the tobacco industry fought efforts to ban tobacco usage despite the increasing number of deaths, since a ban would impinge on the industry’s profits. Acts 19:24-27 reports a similar case of an industry’s  personal agenda.

Paul’s mission was to spread the gospel so that all people would believe in the one and only true God, Jesus Christ, but he was met with opposition by the craftsmen of idols who made great profits from the sales of these items. They were not concerned with the salvation of the people but their own pockets. Their rebellious acts created such disorder in the city that it interrupted Paul’s mission.

Sometimes our personal agendas present an interruption in the workplace, school, church or family. They can also interrupt the work God is trying to do in and through us. Personal agendas are often motivated by money, recognition, lust or power — by a need to feel we are in control. But it is a false feeling. If we trust that God is always in complete control, we have nothing to fear or desire. All of our needs will be met. Philippians 2:3-5 commands: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interest of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”

Reflect:

  • Think of a decision you made in the last week that was based on the well-being of others rather than the well-being of yourself.
  • How might you correct a “personal agenda” action that you took in the last week in order to remove the focus from you and redirect it to the good of others?
